Woodcarving was one of the most popular artistic handicrafts in ancient Novgorod. Wooden items are both handy, and beautiful. Craftsmen managed to make use of various natural properties of wood to create carved icons, holy gates, iconostasis girders, church chandeliers, pulpits, places for praying, altar canopies, candlesticks, effigies of the saints, crosses, and icon cases. These works of old times have entered one of the best expositions of the museum that also includes very rare sculptures of saints. The exposition is located on the first floor in the former Public Offices building.
