It is located on Moskovskaya Street near Yaroslav’s Court. It was built by the people living on Lubyanitsa Street, which crossed the Marketplace, on the site where in 1356 wooden church had been erected. The church burned down and was rebuilt again a few times. The 14th-century foundation, apses and 4.5 m high walls remained.

After the fire of 1745 the church was thoroughly rebuilt and acquired features of Moscow Baroque. The facades demonstrate the original 14th-century masonry.

The church houses the exhibition called “Reborn from the Ruins. Church of Saviour's Transfiguration and its frescoes”. The exhibition displays frescoes from the Church of Saviour's Transfiguration on Kovalevo Field that were thought to be lost in the ruins of the church destroyed during the Great Patriotic War but later were collected according to the unique method invented by A. and V. Grekovs and mounted on titanium shields.
