From February 1, 2018 the church is closed.
The architecture of the church is of typical construction for the 14th c. The original look of the church and unique frescos of the 14th c. have been preserved till today. The frescos are believed to be painted by Balkan artists. The beauty of the church lies in its simplicity.
Lyubov P. Rachmaninova (1849 - 1929), the mother of the outstanding Russian composer Sergey V. Rachmaninoff along with some other famous people was buried in the churchyard. Novgorodian land has always been considered to be the composer’s homeland and the well know bell ringing of St. Sophia’s Belfry have echoed in his music.
