St. Nicholas Cathedral
St Nicholas’ Cathedral is the oldest cathedral in Russia among those devoted to St. Nicholas. The building of the Cathedral followed the miraculous appearance of the icon of St. Nicholas at the Lipno Lake which healed Prince Mstislav Vladimirovich, the son of Vladimir Monomakh. As a result of the recent restoration works, the cathedral regained it’s original forms that go back to the Kievan architectural tradition of the 11th century. There are some fragments of icons of 12th c. including "Trials of Job", "The Day of Judgement", icon painting, etc. preserved till this day. The 19th century western annex to the Cathedral houses the exhibition “Tiles in the Collection of Novgorod State United Museum”.
