Chudovo
A small town Chudovo is situated 80 km far from Veliky Novgorod. Some time it was a big coachmen's settlement on the post road connecting Saint-Petersburg with Moscow. Then in 1851 it becomes a railway station. Chudovo was first mentioned in chronicles in 1539.
Chudovo flourished due to the favourable geographical position and the proximity of Moscow and Saint-Petersburg. The aristocracy from Saint-Petersburg chose its picturesque surroundings for living. The names of famous Russian cultural figures are related to the land of Chudovo.
Great Russian poet Nikolay Nekrasov bought a small estate in Chudovo. Today you can see a two-storey house, where the poet lived in summer from 1871 till 1876. Nekrasov could work effectively and have a great rest here. The first exhibition opened in 1971. Today there is a literature exposition and memorial rooms.
Near Chudovo there is a village Syabrennitsy, where Gleb Uspensky, a writer-democrat, lived in 1881-1882. Today it is the only museum of the writer.
Nowadays Chudovo is one of industrial centres of Novgorod region. Its high industrial potential and favourable geographical position attract foreign investors, many new enterprises are built.
