Borovichi
The town of Borovichy is situated on the famous rapids river Msta, that flows into the Ilmen lake. In the ancient times Msta was used for trading routes conecting the land of Veliky Novgorod with the Volga and the Caspian Sea.
Borovichy was first mentioned in chronicles in 1495, but the settlement existed much earlier. After Peter I founded Vishny Volochyok waterway system, Borovichy was rapidly growing. Carpenters, barge haulers, shipping pilots lived here, barges were built and repaired, the population grew.
In the second half of the XVIIIth century near Borovichy the resources of lime, iron pyrites, fire clay, quartz sand, brown coal were found. The Borovichy clays were the best in Russia and produced fire clay not worse than the English analogues. Since the 50s of the XIXth in the outskirts of the town the factories producing fire clays appeared. Thus, in 1913 Borovichy factories produced about 40 per cent of all fire clays in Russia.
Today Borovichy is the second, after Veliky Novgorod, industrial centre of the region. Its main production is fire clay, it is exported in many countries of the world.
